Tim Legge’s (ZST Chair) visit to Zambia and reports on projects June 2026 part five.
“On Monday I visited Kwasha Mukwenu Community School with Bernard, Mwate and Tainess. Christopher the Head assembled all the children for us to see, and I had the opportunity to speak to some of them. There are now 278 in the school and 44 in the nursery. Christopher told us that more parents than previously are choosing to send their children to KW. An extra classroom has been constructed.
He introduced us to all the teachers, whose number has increased since my visit last year. We thanked them for their teaching and commitment to the school and pupils. The Chair and Secretary of the school's committee were also present. We also took the opportunity to tell them about ZST. They were pleased to know that the school will soon receive a donation of footballs and netballs. Christopher suggested a match between his school and the players of Tainess' project. An extra classroom has been constructed. We saw lunch being prepared. The feeding programme remains very important because it provides many of the children with their only substantial meal of the day.
Some of the founding ladies were present, just as they usually are, although we were told that they are no longer involved with the running of the school.
The new national curriculum was introduced hurriedly and is providing teachers with challenges because teaching materials have not been provided. Some of the A level textbooks that were donated by Book Aid International are helping the teachers with their lesson plans. More English literature and language books would be useful, as well as more advanced ICT textbooks. I undertook to ask Book Aid International if they could provide such books.”
