Tim Legge’s (ZST Chair) visit to Zambia and reports on projects June 2026 part four.

“On Friday afternoon Alice, Tainess and I visited the St Lawrence Home of Hope for Boys in Kamwala South, Lusaka. We were welcomed by Brother Jacek and a long discussion ensued. The good work of the home continues and with support from many donors, the high running costs are met. For example, the boys consume 15 loaves of bread per day and 25kgs of mealie meal. Jacek is very successful in obtaining funds from many donors. He appreciates the certainty of our annual grant. He was pleased to know of our donation of 12 footballs. The boys have a sports session once a week.

Currently there are 92 boys in residence, which is less than usual. There are many sad stories, including a boy who was persuaded to leave his life on the streets and to enter the home, only to run away. While back on the streets, he was injured in a road accident and lost a leg. After treatment he returned to the home.

Jacek is adamant that street children should not be given food and money by well-meaning people because this action encourages the children to maintain that lifestyle.

The work of tracing relatives and counselling them and the boys continues with the aim of reuniting the children with their families where appropriate.

Jacek said that the books which were donated by Book Aid International are being read by the boys and used appropriately by the teachers in the home's classroom and the adjacent school, which most of the boys attend.

Repairs to the ageing buildings are ongoing and since my last visit an ablutions block has been renovated and painting undertaken. There is a need to improve the sink drainage and work surfaces in the kitchen and also to fit new showers in a bathroom.

There are two dogs at the Home, and two boys are their appointed handlers. It was wonderful to see the close relationships between the dogs and boys.”
