Education Grants

Changing the course of their lives - each year The Zambia Society Trust offers grants to a small number of students to pursue further studies on completion of their secondary education.

The Trust assists disadvantaged Zambian students to pursue educational, technical, vocational and training courses in Zambia at recognised and approved institutions.

Short courses of six months and those of one or two years will be considered and also longer courses. However, grants are awarded for a maximum of two years and the final two years only will be supported on a longer course. The partial grants awarded will usually cover tuition and examination fees and sometimes accommodation costs. Consideration is given to applicants who have successfully started a course but have two more years to complete. The Trust supports young, able students to enable them to gain employment and also encourages practical courses in agriculture and trades.

The initial short list is drawn up by a Zambia-based advisory group, which takes into account the student's record and circumstances, the value, cost and length of the course, and issues of disability, gender and geographical location. Final selection is completed by the UK committee.

Funding is channelled directly to the Zambian institutions operating the courses. The annual funding available varies according to Trust funds but in recent years £30,000 has been allocated to support students pursuing courses including teaching, nursing, radiography, heavy equipment repair, metal fabrication, agriculture, fisheries, telecommunications, and journalism & public relations.

Students are very appreciative of the assistance received from the Trust.

Extracts from recent emails:

"I write with profound gratitude to your organisation for the support rendered to me during my final year of study at the University of Zambia. I am now the proud holder of a degree in special education which has been made possible by your support.

As soon as I am employed it would give me joy to contribute to your organisation that was there for me, so that it can continue to offer its support to other individuals in need.
Thank you very much for your support".

"I am in my third year now and currently working on the clinical area. In about two week's time we shall start going out for our neonatal and psychiatry experience, either in Ndola or Lusaka depending on the group I am put in and it will last for six weeks. Then we have a huge exam in March. It is called a mock hospital exam and helps assess how ready we are for the final exam which will be in May.

Thank you very much."

“Good day, I wish to write to you to inform you that I successfully managed to clear my exams for my three years at Levy Mwanawansa Medical University. And I am glad and overjoyed to also inform you that I am graduating on the 21st of this month (September) with a diploma clinical medical general (cog).

Let me take this opportunity to thank you (Zambia Society Trust) for the opportunity you gave me to grant of K8,000 towards my school fees at a time when I needed it the most. The grant has really helped me to be where I am today and I believe you are still out there helping out the less privileged like you did for me. Please keep up the good work. Once again allow me to say thank you.”

“I am a second year student at Livingstone College of nursing and midwifery pursuing a Diploma in Registered Nursing. I was very happy and humbled when I received an email from you informing me that I am one of the students awarded grants under the Zambia Society Trust.

This academic year has been very interesting and I keep acquiring new knowledge all thanks to you who made sure I am still in school because you paid my tuition fees. This year I was attached to the various departments at Livingstone Teaching Hospital such as the psychiatric ward, maternity ward, surgery ward, medical ward, main Intensive care unit, theatre, Eye clinic, and many others in order for me to learn and perfect my skills as nursing is a hands-on career.

I did not find any challenges this year at school and I managed to pass my exams at first attempt. I promise to continue working hard in both practical and theory so that I will complete my program.”
