Sponsored Bike Ride for Shingwa School - Help please!

One of our Trustees, Mathias Mbewe, is looking for sponsorship to raise funds for a very worthwhile cause, Shingwa basic school near Mpongwe, Zambia. Here is the background.

As part of Mathias’ commitment to the local community close to where he farms, apart from farming he also teaches Maths and Science at Shingwa one day a week to grade 8’s and 9’s. The school is very poorly resourced with 600 pupils, and teachers employed by the government. The school has 2 x 2 classroom blocks and a single classroom building. One of the 2 classroom blocks is used by grade 8’s and the other by grade 9’s whilst the other 2 classroom block and single classroom are used for the primary school. The classrooms for the primary have no desks and pupils sit on the floor for their lessons. The classroom for the youngest children in the school has no desk and no concrete floor (see above). It is an enormous challenge to learn under these conditions.

So this is where Mathias needs your help. To raise some funds for this school Mathias is going on a sponsored bike ride in UK on 28th October. He’s going to cycle 136 miles coast-to-coast from Seaside, a small coastal town in Cumbria, to Toby port near Sunderland, to be completed in 24 hours. His target is to raise £2500 to buy 100 desks for the primary section of the school. Each desk seats 2 children, 100 desks will seat 200 children. Since half of the primary school comes in the morning session and half in the afternoon session, all primary school children will be able to sit on a desk during their lessons.

Please dig deeply and help Mathias hit and even exceed his target. The link below to JustGiving will enable you to donate:
