Christmas Appeal 2025 Update

Thanks to your support and generosity, we have already raised nearly £2,000 towards our Christmas Appeal! Footballs and netballs made in Lusaka by the social enterprise Alive and Kicking cost £14.50 each, so that means another 150 or so balls can be sent to the community schools and other organisations we support.

But the need is very great; the quotes below from recipients across Zambia give a sense of how much difference the gift of a football or netball can make, and the scale of the need:

“The school has a total number of 478 learners, with one worn out soccer ball. Learners have to take turns to play or else they'd improvise a ball by rolling up scraps of cloth and bits of string. The trouble has always been that the older learners tend to get all the ball time, while most of the other children never get near it" - Headteacher at Kawama Community School, Kabwe.

"I felt like I've got a bit more skillful just because of the new ball. I'm young and up until now I hardly got the chance to get a touch. Now I want to practice with this new ball, so I can improve."  Pupil Bweengwa Community School, Monze District.

“I am very grateful for the balls which I received. They will go a long way in helping the youths in this community to exercise and live a healthy life. Also, when they are busy playing football and netball they will refrain from drugs and other bad habits since they will be busy.” Hilda, who runs football and netball teams in her village in Eastern Province.

“The benefits of getting young people into football are wide ranging. Roughly, a good number of children suffer from stress, anxiety, depression or some other mental health concern. Thus, sports greatly benefit the children’s mood and ability to manage their mental health better. More importantly, donation such as this one gives talented young people from vulnerable backgrounds a way to transcend their circumstances”. Honourable Michelo Kasauta, MP, on a visit to one of the community schools supported by ZST.

Thank you so much if you have already donated to our Christmas Appeal. And if you haven't, please remember that every donation, however small, will change the life of a child in Zambia. The Zambia Society Trust is run entirely by volunteers - we have no employed staff - and our modest admin costs are paid out of members' subscriptions. This means that every penny donated to the Trust will go directly to support our projects in Zambia.

You can donate through JustGiving by clicking on the button below. If you prefer to donate by cheque, please make it payable to the Zambia Society Trust and send it to our Treasurer, Mr Andrew Rose, at: Croft House, Mungrisdale, Penrith, CA11 0XR. Please mark your envelope Footballs and Netballs. Thank you.
